Classes
The Windsor Bloco 4-H Drum and Dance after school program targets
middle school and high
school students, between the ages of 10 and 19. The program encourages boys and
girls of
diverse nationalities and ethnic backgrounds to come together and share their
love of music and
dance in a safe after school environment. Older High School students, along with
paid
adult staff, serve as mentors and teachers by sharing their drum and dance skills
with younger
teens.
The goals of the program are:
• To provide education regarding the health benefits of overall physical fitness through drum and dance.
• To develop skills in music and dance.
• To encourage eating habits through exposure to healthy snacks.
• To foster cultural awareness through an appreciation of our similarities and differences.
• To provide a safe environment for teens through positive self-esteem building activities.
Percussion and Dance
Youth are introduced to Afro/Brazilian, Cuban, Hip-Hop through rhythm and dance. Drum students learn the basic concepts and the techniques of playing various instruments: conga, surdo, repeniquè, tamborim, shekere, bells, djembès and more. Dance Students learn the basic steps and movements to the beat of the drums. They are also involved in developing their own dance rountines.
Both drum and dance students learn about themes, developing the
choreography, and costume making
Performance Skills
Once
the drum and dance skills are mastered, the youth perform for
the community. They bring smiles and fast paced rhythms
to their audiences. By integrating
basic music skills and learning to
work together as a unit, youth are involved in team building and cultural
appreciation. Students also contribute to the process of creating a successful
performance
through committing to disciplined rehearsals where they learn new music skills
and routines and
how to work effectively with other team members to produce the final product.
